Our Services

Our institute offers veterinarians and pet owners examinations for ectoparasites, coproscopic examinations, species identification of transmitted endoparasites, dissections and testing of the effectiveness of disinfectants.

Our Profile

Research, teaching and diagnostics are the three pillars on which our work at the Institute of Parasitology is concentrated. In doing so, we focus on the clarification and control of parasitoses and zoonoses.

Our Profile

Parasitology was and is a central component of veterinary medicine. Both the education about and the fight against parasitoses and zoonoses play an important role. The Institute of Parasitology fulfils this task by training students, diagnosing parasitic diseases and carrying out various research projects. As a member of the Centre for Infectious Medicine, we also strive to realise interdisciplinary research projects.

Teaching in parasitology:

Students are familiarised with the basics of parasitology and the relevant parasitoses. The basis is the lecture Parasitology, which is accompanied by a course in which the students get to know the most important parasites and their detection methods on real objects. The basics are deepened and consolidated through various focus events. In order to establish a practical relevance, the students are presented with a disease course in so-called tracks, the cause of which they then have to determine using samples provided (faeces, blood).

Diagnostics in parasitology:

With the diagnosis of parasites, the institute assumes a central task within the faculty. Every year, several thousand internal and external samples are examined here for parasites.

Science:

The Institute of Parasitology conducts both basic and applied research, primarily in the field of coccidia. In addition to parasite-host interaction, the institute focuses on epidemiology and replacement methods for animal experiments.

Appointment as a consultant laboratory

With effect from 1 February 2016 and initially limited until 30 June 2024, our Institute was selected by the Board of the German Veterinary Medical Society (DVG) as a consultant laboratory for two areas at once, namely for "Intestinal Coccidia" and for "Cryptosporidia in Animals". The appointment as a consultant laboratory was made in recognition and appreciation of the scientific focus of the Institute of Parasitology and its proven diagnostic competence and expertise.

Our Team

Our team is committed to the education of our students and contributes greatly to basic and applied research in the field of parasitology.
