It was a shock to learn the devastating news that Marina Krautwald had recently passed. I still vividly remember meeting her for the first time at the ECAMS meeting in 2005, just prior to starting my residency in Avian Medicine. Her leadership, professionalism and passion towards the profession really inspired me, and she has been a true role model for me ever since. Her passing is truly a loss for avian and exotic medicine, but she will always be remembered for her invaluable contributions to the field. She has been instrumental to the development of Avian Medicine as a specialty in Europe, and gained recognition far beyond on an international level for her many contributions of which some examples include the advancements in diagnostic imaging and advocacy towards improving the welfare standards of birds and other exotic animals kept as pets. She leaves behind a void that is not easily filled by anyone or anything, and I will miss her personally as a colleague, mentor and friend. My thoughts go out to her husband, children, family, friends and immediate colleagues for who her loss is undoubtedly even more profound and devastating, and I wish them all the strength in the world to cope with losing Marina.
